Trying to get widescreen monitor to work on Debian

I'm a complete Linux noob. Just installed Debian 7.4 (3.2.0-4-amd64) on our server. I'm trying to set up everything, but the server is connected to a widescreen Vizio TV/monitor. I'm using Gnome 3. My only monitor resolutions available are 1280x1024, 1280x960, 1152x864, and some other 4:3 ones.

How can I set the monitor to a widescreen resolution?

BTW, when I was researching this I saw places that mentioned editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but that file does not exist on our server. I also tried running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and it didn't seem to do anything.

Thanks.

If your're stuck in 4:3, make sure you're not using the vesa driver, which doesn't know about 16:9 monitors. Run this command
Code:
less /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and try to see
1. What your video card is (It will be some way down).
2. What driver the video card is using (Probably vesa)
3. Why it chooses whatever video mode it chooses.

Don't paste the whole thing pls - I won't read it. Post any useful snippets.

If you're not on vesa driver, there is a DisplaySize option you can put in xorg.conf.d/somefile.conf to set the size. it goes

DisplaySize xdim ydim - each in millimetres. Leave this until last thing to try.

Tell us how you got on.
