Trying to get Linuxmint up and running with a NVidia GeForce Graphics Card
Hello. I just bought a new pc. It has plenty of hard drive space and ram with a 2.6GHz processor.
I'm trying to run a dual-boot with Windows 7 and Linuxmint.
I need some help as to how I go about installing my video driver. I have tried combinations of the following:
-clicking on the taskbar icon that says "restricted drivers are available" and enabling the drivers
-going to Software Manager/Drivers and choosing to install "NVidia 3D Drivers"
-Going to the Nvidia site directly and downloading/installing their driver.
My efforts so far have only resulted in the following behavior:
- The screen changes from color into grayscale and becomes unresponsive except to close it out
- The screen freezes up completely forcing me open up a terminal to kill the offending process (which turns out to be firefox)
One other note. It may be a coincidence but each time the screen froze up on me was after I tried to log into "Last Pass" (a firefox addon for password management). Could an add-on cause all of this to happen?!
Thanks for the help
What is the monitor?
Start with the vesa driver. If everything is OK, then switch to the "nv" driver. If it work with "nv", it should work with "nvidia".
To run these tests, just edit the driver line** in /etc/xorg.conf (You might also have to install the drivers--they will be in the package manager.)
**You'll edit this line (sample file---yours will be different):
Thanks for the help. It turned out to be the add-on to firefox that was causing the problem ("Last Pass" -- a password manager) I had to sign up for the service again under a different user name to get it to work properly.
