Trying to get into GUI on RH 7.3 (VMWare - Workstation)

Here is the deal...I did not Install GNOME or KDE becuase I plan to come back and upgrade to KDE after I get my basic Xfree86, X-Windows(or whatever its called) setup.

problem # 1

INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

What in the world does that mean, and how do I fix it?

Problem # 2

I try to login as (quick root)

su

and when I put my root password it says it is incorrect, but when I login as root and put my password it goes through, no problem?

Howcome my password dosen't work under su, isn't su the same as root?

problem # 3 (The BIG one)

VMWare tell me what I have to do in order to get my X-Server setup

They tell me to put this in

cd /
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt
cp /mnt/vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz /tmp
umount /dev/cdrom

When I get to this step

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt

it gives me this crap!

mount: fs type iso9600 not supported by kernel
mount: maybe you meant iso9600 ?

Can someone that knows about this stuff please help me out

I am running Kernel 2.4.18-3 on an i686

you may want to actually just add /mnt/CDROM on the end (not in caps, that's just to show you what I mean).
