Do this:

$ make && sudo make install

This line starts out as a normal user compiling the driver, and if the compile is successful, it installs it with temporary root authority (you enter the root password).

The idea is to minimize your use of root authority, but installing kernel drivers requires it. So you invoke "sudo" which means "do this as 'su'", e.g. superuser or root.

Easy = Windows = Bill Gates becomes rich by solving problems for you.

Hard = Linux = you actually learn stuff and acquire some measure of control over your life.

Hey ... tough choice.

still didn't work.

I installed everything that was listed under cam in synaptic package manager. Still same problem. Cheese is so dark only shining a flashlight at the camera do you see (the light anyway) - and static snow in skype.

First off, libv4l should already have been installed as part of the default Ubuntu installation.

Run this command :
Code:
locate|grep /usr/lib/libv4l
If anything comes up, that means you already have it installed. If nothing comes up, try this
Code:
sudo apt-get install libv4l-0
If cheese still doesn't work after that, you may have to tell it to use libv4l.

To do that from a console type :
Code:
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
cheese
(Don't worry, we can automate this part later so you don't have to keep tying that if this turns out to be the solution).
----------
If you still want to compile it from source, the version of libv4l you are trying to compile is very old.

Try this one :
http://freshmeat.net/urls/5ecd7149a2...c8b84ae8d3efe1

Extract that to a new directory and run make as usual.

However, instead of doing make install do this :

sudo make install PREFIX=/usr (The PREFIX part tells the computer where to install stuff.)

I think this is a case where the installation instructions are out of date. Try this:

1. Unpack the source package.

2. Enter the source directory.

3. Type this (as a user, not root):

Code:
$ cmake && make && sudo make install
Notice the first command "cmake" -- it is part of a new scheme for managing source distributions. It's just possible that the installation instructions you read are out of sync with the actual installation package's contents.

Good to know information, I wondered how you all did that.

Code:
test
(I was testing if I did it right)

But, this is not getting any closer to getting the webcab to work.

As I said above, the cheese is terribly dark (absurdly so) and colored snow static in Skype.

Did you try this?

Code:
export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
cheese

Code:
any@Ubuntu:~$ export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
any@Ubuntu:~$ cheese

(cheese:23357): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid cast from `GtkAlignment' to `GtkScrolledWindow'

(cheese:23357): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_scrolled_window_set_policy: assertion `GTK_IS_SCROLLED_WINDOW (scrolled_window)' failed
any@Ubuntu:~$
Opens cheese - and cheese is very, very dark and blue hues.
Skype is still colored static snow.
