Trying to access shared files on windows computer

Hello
I am new to linux and just setting up my installation.
I am trying to access shared files on a windows xp computer that I can access via a Belkin router.
when I try to connect to my windows computer Ubuntu can see the windows network and computer but when I try to access the files on the computer I get "the folder contents could not be displayed" error message.

How can I access these files?

I am using Linuxmint Cassandra (which is based on Ubuntu)

I have been able to access the files before using other versions of Linux that i have tried using live CDs

any help much appreciated.

Open the ports in the firewall. I might be wrong but Firestarter might be on.

I dont't have firestarter or any other firewall installed.

There is no firewall on the windows computer either.

Make sure the sharing option is enabled on this particular windows folder.
