Troubles in GM965 (X3100) paradise...

Okay, so my girlfriend's hard drive on her Sony Vaio crapped out. I ordered a new one and replaced it with no problems. Well, I considered this the perfect opportunity to put Slackware on it, considering she didn't have any backup OS cds that came with her computer (the alternative would be to buy the Windows Vista Home Premium for $130).

Anyway, hard drive was recognized, full install went very smoothly. Everything is in working order, so to speak.

Except one thing, the intel GM965 (X3100) chipset is one stubborn beast, and I cannot for the life of me get the resolution to fit the screen, or even increase the resolution to anything above 1024x768.

intel modules showed up as loaded right off the bat, and (with one of my first efforts) changing the vesa driver in the xorg.conf file to intel produced a very noticeable change upon restarting KDE.

This change wasn't for the best however. For one thing, instead of having two black bars on either side of the KDE desktop I now have one big black bar on the right side of the screen. This is evidence to me that the intel driver is at least noticed and being used.

I have been researching on and off for the past couple weeks, taking a stab at the problem when my nerves are sufficiently cooled, but it finally has come to the point where I felt I needed to post my problem here.

I have fiddled with the xorg.conf file in many different ways. From adding higher resolutions to the "Modes" line to playing with the "driver" line to loading up the "DRI" module and then setting a section that loads with the mode 0666.

Whatever I have done doesn't seem to recognize any change, and the KDE tools used to set resolutions higher fail to recognize any extra modes that I add.

Am I basically to resign to the fact that Slackware fails to sufficiently support the Intel X3100 graphics chipset and no amount of fiddling will ever get the desired results?

Or am I merely confining myself to a narrow path and missing something else entirely that could pull me out of what I would hope is really nothing but a trivial matter at best.

Well, I tried putting Ubuntu on her laptop and... *poof* problem solved, which was quite reassuring.

However, now my only problem that remains is getting the Atheros AR242x chipset recognized and working properly.

It's funny, but with Slackware, getting wireless working was relatively simple using ndiswrapper and the proper windows drivers, however, trying to do the same thing on Ubuntu has become a headache.

It's kind of made me appreciative of Slackware's bare-bones approach, adding things I see fit, without overloading my senses. With my laptop, getting the resolutions set up was simple. Of course, I had an NVIDIA GPU on mine.

It's refreshing to see such strong linux support with nvidia's drivers. Now if only intel could do that. Can't have it all I guess.

I Have the same problem, and I wish the solution wasn't moving over to Ubuntu.
