trouble with XFree on Mandrake 9.1 install

I have just installed Mandrake 9.1 in my computer. Install went very well but now have no GUI.

"startx" gives me a long error message, which contains this
"X10 fatal 10 error 104

I tried "grep /var/log/Xfree86.0.log" but there was no outpu.

"/sbin/runlevel" and got "N5".

I got these command via LUG but they haven't been able to help.

Mdk correctly detected my Graphics card as S3 Trio 64V2 generic
and monitor as HPD2825 Ultra VGA. I used those settings first, then tried 800x600 256 colour, and got "error" on tesing.

So tried 800x600 @ 60Hz (worked with a previous install of Suse 7). Didn't get opportunity to test, but still didn't work.

I know that the person who installed Mandrake 9 for me had problems with GUI but don't know what and can't contact him just now to find out.

Any ideas most welcome. I am a newbie so instructions for command line need to be explicit please!

This is just s frustrating - I hope it can be resolved.

Thanks in hope
Rose

Try setting up X again. Log in as root into a console. Type XFdrake and have a go by trial and error. If that command doesn't work, try /usr/sbin/XFdrake and it should.

I tried that (the command works, and have worked through trying half a page of different cards, even though it recognises mine. I also tried different resolutions and refressh rates. Went to Xfree website, but the pages didn't load (maybe busy I suppose).

Guess I'll keep trying the range of options unless someone can steer me.

Is it expensive and/or difficult to buy new graphics cards?

Thanks
Rose

I picked up a nice ATI Rage Pro 128 32meg AGP card for just less than £20 UK - $30 US, I think. I did have an SiS 305 based card and found no acceptable driver for it under Linux. Just check to see if your board takes AGP or PCI. Pretty much all boards take PCI, but many newer ones (3yrs old or less) also take AGP cards which work better.

Hmmm - I'm in NZ - don't know what the exchange rate is at the moment. Probably 2 to 21/2 I think. I hope to buy a new computer reasonably soon, so wouldn't want tp spend too much. Once I get hold of the person who installed Mdk 9 he might remember what he used and it might work in 9.1 too. I tried an install of 9 and had same problem.

Thanks for your advice - I'll see what happens.
