Trouble with wireless on ASUS EEE 900

Hi

I just got a Asus EEE 900 and I really like it. However the wireless connection is unstable. It finds my router without any trouble, but logging on to it causes the problem. I have to switch between key index 1-4 (in the logon window), to get it to logon.

I use a D-link router and WPA. There is no problem with the connection on anoter computer (mac). I dont have MAC filtering on.

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

I have the same computer and have no problem connecting in Ubuntu 7.10, 8.04 or 8.10. You don't say what distro you are using. Each distro is different in how it handles networking and wireless in particular.

Thats the one that is default installed on the eee, correct? I honestly never booted the version of Xandros that came w/ eee, but will verify what the other poster said, ubuntu-eee will recognize the wireless out of the box(currently, its version 8.04) I know w/ the "normal" Ubuntu 8.10, all you have to do is install the restricted extras, restart, and you have wireless.

Have you checked in at the eee user forums?

http://forum.eeeuser.com/index.php

Weird, I've not heard this problem w/ Xandros.

A good source of information on how to use and customize the eeePC is eeeuser.com. Go to their wiki and it explains how to change from the Xandros IceWM that comes with it to full KDE (called Easy Mode and Advanced Mode respectively).

There is no Synaptic in Easy Mode, but you can launch it from a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) with just "synaptic". Then you can add ksmserver and kicker and then you will have the option of using the Easy or Advanced mode and switching between them.

The advantage for you to install Advanced Mode is that you can use other tools in the repositories. For me the default wireless connects easily, first time, every time, but maybe something else would give you better success. It could be that your wireless is different from mine or that you got a bad one. Like the previous poster, I have not heard of any wireless problems.

I have used the network manager in Gnome, KDE, XFCE, Enlightenment, Wicd (wicked), Wifi Radar and the one that comes with Xandros to connect and all work well. Failing getting them to work, perhaps someone knows of some diagnostics to run on your wireless to check it for problems.
