Trouble printing after changing it to Simply MEPIS

Hello, everybody! I have SimplyMepis installed in my hard drive, replacing Windows. I like it very much! I recently changed my printer over to SimplyMEPIS, following the instructions in Point and Click LINUX. The test page came out, but there was no text on it, only graphics. I typed a document using OpenOffice.org Writer, but couldn't get it to print. The printer drew up a page from the tray and quickly ejected it blank. Also have other PC problems. I lost the intro blue "matrix" screen when logging in and out. Would appreciate some help on this subject.

Thanks!:newbie:

Go to linuxprinting.org and check for info on your printer. Printing under linux is okay but drivers can be a problem. If information on your printer model is hard to find you may have to experiment with different drivers.
I print with a Canon and had to try a few drivers before getting reasonable results. Turboprint provides good drivers but costs ~$35
