Trouble Loaded Linux onto a Sony Vaio which is now not compatible to run Windows 7-8
 

I have tried loading Bodhi Linux without success. I used the same disk on another desktop computer running a Pentium 4 with success. After loading Bodhi I tried Ubuntu with success and then loaded Lubuntu which is currently running. Its great. I am very happy with this setup on the desktop computer. If only I could get it to run on the Sony Vaio. I use the Vaio only for watching iView programs but was told that using Linux would speed up the downloads seeing that Microsoft Outlook will not be able to be upgraded because of the hardware capability not allowing to run a later version of Windows.

You should post some detailed information on the Sony Vaio such as how old it is, processor speed, RAM and graphic card. It would also be useful if you indicated what happens when you try to install Lubuntu on it, what errors you get if any.

harryhenry, i'm not sure i understand - what is your current situation with that vaio?
what do you have installed, what is working, and most of all, what is the exact nature of your problem? how exactly is it "now not compatible to run Windows 7-8"? what does that mean?

There have been a lot of models called Vaio from Sony between 1997 and 2014, all with different specifications and components from different manufacturers. At the very least, we need to know the model number, although what we really need to know is how much RAM you have and which video chip it uses.

It should be able to run Bodhi, which will run (just) in 128MB. Lubuntu's live disk needs 512, although the alternative installation disk (not live) will work in 256.

@ ondoho: He means that the Vaio is too small to run modern versions of Windows.

The Sony Vaio is a : PCG-K86P(I), it has a Pentium 4 CPU, 3.2GHz processor and has 512MB of RAM. The display adaptor : ATI Mobility Radeon 9200. The BIOS is Phoenix, version R0104X3.
I tried to load Windows 8.0 on it and using a program on the Microsoft site, computer requirements, it said the hardware was not suitable for running Windows 8.0 It required more memory.

Which is correct. 32 bits Windows 8 requires 1 gb RAM minimum. The 64 bits version has 2 gb minimum. And from my experience that's the absolute bottom. Windows itself already requires that amount of RAM to run. Barely leaves anything else for programs. Windows 8 really requires at least 4 gb RAM for normal use. Windows 7 is in a similar boat. 512 mb of RAM won't cut it there either.

I don't get what you mean that Linux will speed up downloads? Might be me, but on my computers it doesn't matter speedwise if I'm downloading stuff in Windows or Linux. They have the same speed.

Add another 512MB stick to have decent performance; if not, antiX or Cruchbang are good Debian-derived choices for a distro on a P4 machine with minimal RAM.

With one gig, Win7 32-bit should work, too.

You should be able to install Bodhi on a P4 with 512 MB of ram.
I have done it with Bodhi 2.2 a while back.
You will need a swap partition though (I would suggest min 2x ram).

We need more info about the problem.

A common error may require you to specify one or more boot options like:
nomodeset or xforcevesa.
Ubuntu has a lot of posts about this, as it seems to be machine dependent.

But like I said we need you to describe the problem giving much more detailed info as possible.
