Trouble installing new kernel in slackware 10.2
 

hi, im somewhat new to linux, and i'm trying to upgrade the kernel to a 2.6.x so i can hopefully install a driver to this usb wireless networking thing.

when i try to install the 2.6.13 kernel that came with slackware using
installpkg kernel-generic-2.6.13-i486-1.tgz
i get "Cannot install kernel-generic-2.6.13-i486-1.tgz: pacakge does not end in .tgz

i copied and pasted the command right from the readme file on the cd. and i checked, the file totally ends in .tgz. also i have no idea how to go about upgrading one from source, but i'm up to anything, so if anyone can help it'd be greatly appreciated. or if you know how to get a linksys wusb11 network card to work without upgrading kernels, i'm all ears.

I have compiled kernels for Debian and Unbuntu from source . . . both were different. I actually used the link above to compile the Debian kernel,

You can download a "pristine" kernel, the latest being 2.6.18 from http://www.kernel.org. It is 50 MB. Read all the way through that guide before you attemp this, but afterwards you will be amazed at how easy it really is.

Make sure you find a list of required packages BEFORE you begin, or you'll run into problems.

In my opinion installing a new kernel from source is nicer than having installpkg do it for you. In any case you will learn more about linux kernel that way.

i finally got it after a lot of trials and just as many errors. i used a guide i found in a reply to the guide you sent me, i'd post the url but it won't let me, which i think is kind of silly. but oh well. thanks for your help guys
