Trouble getting online

I'm using Redhat 8, netowrk device control. I set up a configuration for my isp (earthlink dialup). I know all the information is correct because I'm using it now from a different computer. When I click activate to connect an empty box pops up and stays there, and I'm not connected. The modem is plugged in, and the phone line is ok.

Since I'm not getting any errors I'm not sure what to do. Any help would be great.

it's been a while since I used RedHat 8, but as I recall there was some way to see a log as (or after) it tries dialing up via PPP. That would be helpful right now.

However i suspect your modem isn't the device you're telling network device control that it is. is it a serial port modem? some internal PCI modem? For example, if it's serial, check that you have the right port chosen (/dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1 or whatever), maybe try several different ports. you can do that in the "hardware" part of network device control.

I don't know what type of modem it is, how could I check? I tried other ports, all except /dev/ttyS0 gave me an instant error when I tried to activate it.

interesting. describe your modem: what sort of connection does it make to your computer? is it external (serial, USB?) or internal (ISA? PCI?)?

It plugs into the inside. I put it in myself when i bought the computer, I wish I kept the box.

I think I found the problem. I deleted the connection and tried adding a new modem connection. It says no modem was found. I think this may have happened last time too and it just tried using a generic modem or something. I opened the case and checked the modem, its fully pluged in. How can I get it to find my modem?

I think it was made by Motorola (whatever that is), its written on it.

it's probably a win modem. you'll have to find out what chipset is on the modem. have a read here.

and here

good luck.

read your edit, it lead me here.

http://www.motorola.com/softmodem/sm56_download.htm

there is documentation as well as linux drivers at that link. happy reading.
good luck.

I did what that motorola website said, no luck. So, I ran scanModem and it said that the modem was unsupported and I should get a better supported one. So I opened another computer I have, and took the modem for the other. When I booted it detected the modem and made a configuration for it. I was happy. Then I went to set up my connection. No modem found. I tried anyway, didn;t work. Could it be the program I'm using to connect, since redhat did see it during boot? Is there a better alternative?

Peacedog 01-17-2004 04:36 PM

what is the chipset of the new modem. did you have a look at

http://www.linmodems.org/

to see if it's supported.

also you may have a read here.

good luck.

Yes, I have. I just tried a few more drivers, nothing works.

Can you recomend a modem that is actually supported under redhat 8 (2.4.18-14 i686). I don't mind buying a new one if it will actually work.

I got on :D

I tried KPPP and it was able to detect my modem. Thanks for your help.

Peacedog 01-18-2004 05:22 PM

My problem is a bit different. I can connect using kppp with a dial-up modem. I see the "connect" and that I am connected. When I try to use Netscape, it can't find any websites. It acts like there is no connection.

Any ideas?
