Trouble connecting with gnome ppp

In Mint9, I can connect to the net using the wvdial command in terminal.

But when I use the gnome ppp graphical UI, same phone number, it connects, starts pppd, but then gives:
"The PPP daemon has died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code = 16)
--> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail."

Any idea why this is happening? The wvdial command always gives a good solid connection, so I assume I made an error in configuring gnome ppp. I thought that gnome ppp used the same info as wvdial does, in the wvdial.conf file.

Thank you for tips--

The pppd gets its configuration from files in the /etc/ppp/ directory.

Any troubleshooting tips for these files? Should I compare with wvdial.conf, since info in wvdial.conf enables vwdial to connect OK?
