Hello! to minimize the clutter, i will be using this topic to fulfill my n00bness, haha. and yes, i'm fairly new to this here linux stuff, but i like what i see so far, haha.

ok, today's question is:

I have a hard-drive that i want to install to my linux machine and it has some files in it, i dont want to lose those files so i installed it and all, and it asked at startup if i wanted to partition it or whatever, i thought "nah...". but i cant seem to see the files, and the drive doesn't have the....arrow thing on it like the other drives do. what can i do to be able to see those files in linux like i do in windows? (they are video files so i know i can view them in linux.) oh, and when i click on the drive in question, a message comes up that says "Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: cant find /dev/hdb1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab"

edit: oh, and i use SuSE, just incase that's important, haha :newbie:

i think i understand.

1. does the bios see that hard drive or is it just linux that doesnt see it??? if the bios doesnt see it i would check how its set up weather master or slave.

2. if you want to keep the filesthat are on that hard drive why not put drive back in old pc and save them to cd? im not really sure what files linux can read of windows and vice versa. i know i tried sednding a file to a windows user and they could not open it but never tried opther way around.

3. its always important what os is being used. example someone might beable to tell you from termial how to mount hd or get files off it. im not really sure how to do that since ive never had to.

You need to list the device in fstab and create a mount point for it such as /mnt/stuff or whatever you want to call it

well. after reading the link that emerson gave me, i sobbed uncontrollably and found an easier way, hahaha, i went into the YaST configuration thingy, and just set the mount point like the other drives had (i had other drives in when i put linux so i guess it did it automatically) and it works, haha. tnx anyways guys!

OK! i'm back, now i'm trying to install MPlayer, and i'm reading the readme and it tells me to run some stuff by typing commands, ok, i'm new to this whole thing, so i doubt i can just type "make" and it knows what i'm talking about, can some1 give me a more dumbed down version of how to install this? (this will probably help me with installing things in the future, so explain what it's all about, please)

doesnt yast have mplayer in the grafical yast installer?

Threads at LQ are organized by topic, and creating a single thread with the purpose of covering multiple topics unfortunately would create major difficulties, because any useful information about how to solve problem "X" might be buried deep into a thread that starts out on topic "A", then moves to B, then C, you get the idea. Asking for help on how to install Mplayer is entirely unrelated to info on how to mount a hard drive, and therefore should not be appended to this thread. In other words, it's better to keep each topic self-contained in its own thread. Along these lines, note that you should also do a Search for existing threads that might cover the same topic before posting a new one - often the info that you seek is already available in that existing thread.
