tough network question
 

hi guys, i hope you can help me out.
i am wired connected to a 1gb ethernet connection that has a 1gb switch or ethernet hub between the internet and my computer.

the ethernet hub also has a drive connected to it whci i can see with my macs but it doesnt show up on the linux.

i can see the ethernet hub on the linux but nothing after that. how do i get to see the other drives connected to the ethernet hub?

What do you mean by "see"?

And what do you mean by an "ethernet hub between the internet and my computer"? Do you have a router anywhere in the mix? What about a DHCP server? What is this "ethernet hub"? You mentioned a switch, but then you said it's "between" your computer and "the internet", what does that mean? You can't take an incoming single IP network connection from your ISP, throw it into a dumb switch, and then plug your whole network into it. You need a router/NAT to create a subnet for your devices, so they can all share the IP from your ISP.

I have a router, thats what i mean, sorry. i have a 1gb router with 5 outputs. i have my mac hard wired , another mac hard wired, a synology diskstation ( this is what im trying to get access to) hard wired and a network printer hard wired. i say hard wired meaning NOT wireless. they are all connected to the router via 1 gb ethernet cable cat 6.

by 'see' i mean that when I open a finder window on my mac, a list of drives and computers are available for me to access. or if i need to gain access to the synology which has all my photos on it, i only have to press 'open file' and i can navigate all the way to the synology. its online, its there available.

the linux cannot get access past the router. I can see the router on the network and then nothing else. i hope this is clear.

i just found it using autoconfig in the network settings.

How is your diskstation configured? windows and nfs sharing?
What file browser are you using, Nautilus?

There should be a network icon which when selected will browse for windows shares (SMB/CIFS). If samba is installed then you also have some command line tools to browse the network i.e. findsmb and smbtree. Just press the enter for the password.
