touchpad no longer works

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on a Compaq laptop. My touchpad suddenly stopped working on my user account. It works during login and it works for my guest account. I can use an external mouse. I installed "touchpad-indicator". It shows the touchpad as disabled but the enable command does not work. I entered the command:
gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true
This command did nothing. If anyone could help I would be very greatful.

Backup your configs and move them away. They are located in hidden files in your home directory (~). Not the best answer and not applicable if you invested lot of time tweaking them, but should work.

problem solved

Thank you Elv13. I deleted the dconf folder which was located in ~/.config/. When I logged out and back in a new dconf folder had been created and the problem was solved.
