Totally confused on my bootloader help plz
 

All right here is my System partition and Drive info:

HDA is 20 GB
HDD is 535 MB

HDA1 13 GB Windows XP
HDA2 2 GB Red Hat 9
HDA3 100 MB Swap
HDA4 5 GB SuSe 9
HDD1 100MB /boot
HDD2 435MB /vfat for shared things

I have tried to install GRUB from both SuSe and Red Hat. I put it on my /boot partition on HDD1 and tell my BIOS to boot from the Secondary Slave drive and it boots...it shows an "L" followed by about 6 Lines of "9"s and that is it. If i boot off of HDA it give the windows XP bootloader which still works fine. If i use SuSe CD 1 to boot to Red Hat or to SuSe both OS's work fine...but i'd like a bootloader. So if it is installed in the wrong place tell me how to change it (preferably in SuSe on KDE because that is the current distro GRUB was last installed from for me). If anyone knows the syntax to make a Linux option in the boot.ini file in Windows XP that would be highly appreciated too.

I am a newb to Linux so right out any commands that are needed pleez.

When I installed Red Hat 9 the other day, during setup it gave me an option which bootloader to use and where to put it. Im using grub to dual boot WinXP and RedHat 9.

I also have two drives HDA1 and HDB somethin. Cant remember.
My bootloader should be on the first partition of my primary hard drive. I forgot that also. lol

But yea, during the install it should have asked you which to use. As far as manually setting it up after the install youll have to get advice from someone a little more experienced. I got some good help from

1 you didn't tell me where to install the boot loader lol

2 you sent me a link about Nvidia cards in SuSe not bootloaders

Refer to my first post. 1) I did mention that I thought my boot loader was installed on my primary drives first partition. It gave me the option when I installed my linux OS. If there is a way to change it I have no idea. Thats why i suggested to ask someone with a little more experience.

2) That link has some good info in it, just keep reading. Its not only about suse but alot of questions regarding RedHat and a few more Linux OS's. Thought it would help. Plus you can post there and some of them dudes really know thier shit about linux. If not they know where to find help.

Load lilo from your MBR, why have a /boot partition of 100mb??, I'd add some more swap space, unless you are running of less than 50mb's ram

Alright i got GRUB to boot but it only boots SuSe not red hat or Windows so I will try LILO in the master boot record...im not sure if im able to change it with YAST or not i guess i will find out. thanks guys

Please post menu.lst under the /boot/grub so we can take a look at it.

no need for that i put LILO on the first harddrive MBR and it works like a charm thanks.

It will also work with grub. You just need to edit menu.lst to include Redhat and Windows XP. Be careful when using LILO because Redhat does not include the latest LILO version. When you edit LILO in Redhat, it will use its own LILO to put information in the mbr. The reason why I suggest using grub is because in either SUSE or Redhat you can edit the menu.lst with out effecting what version of bootloader you are using. Grub is a little easy to deal with when using different filesystems like XFS that corrupts LILO information.

Its because of Redhat's useless boot splash. You can get rid of the boot splash and use LILO's or GRUB's color scheme. My grub displays beautiful 16 color graphics without taking up a lot of space. My /boot is 16 megabytes and it barely filled.
