Total system crash in 3 different linux flavors

Hi,

I have been using Ubuntu in this desktop for more than 2 years and recently decided to change to a different linux distro. I went ahead and try knoppix to use gparted as I like to a dual-boot with 7. As soon as I used Knoppix the screen was flickering horizontally very fast. I used Gparted and turned it off as I was getting a headache with all that flickering. I then try Linux mint Live cd and the same flickering happened, so I decided to still go ahead and install Mint (I had already install Win7). Thinking that it might changed after the Hard drive install, wrong the flickering was worst than before. I tried to install other Nvidia drivers and with every time I tried a new driver the system froze completely. Nothing work.
The screen flicks and the it turns black or different colors squares appear on the screen and it turns black. Both of them leave the system totally unresponsive to all keyboard commands. Sometimes didn't even make it from the log in screen.
Tired of hard cold power off my PC. I install Manjaro and it seem stable until I ran a video on Vlc and the video seem to buffer and the playback was chopped up. Then I went to see a video on Youtube of Manjaro to see why Manjaro openbox doesn't have a menu bar and as soon as playback started the flickering started. I tried to look for help on Manjaro.org, but I cant because I have to wait for the administrator to approve my application (waiting an hour now), so I decided to change to the Nvidia driver using mhdw, rebooted, logged in, tried to change the Nvidia settings and the screen flickered and completely system crash. Nothing work. It was back.
I have spend hours since yesterday researching and reinstalling Linux and I have not been able to fix this problem.
Fortunately, my windows 7 boot is working flawlessly (using it right now to post this). I really like Linux better, but I can't get it to work properly.
If any of you have any workaround, suggestion, link, anything that can help me with this issue it will be highly appreciated.
Thank you.
Nvidia Gforce 9100

May I ask why you are switching distros? It seems to me that staying with Ubuntu and having a bootable distro is better than no distro and using Windows.

But maybe you are doing this just to learn more about Linux. What video driver were you using on Ubuntu? nouveau or Nvidia Proprietary ? Also, what graphics card does your computer use?

Have you tried to watch some HD movie in Win7, or to play a big game? Does that work?

I have changed distros so much because I wanted to see other sides of Linux. I was wondering if other linux distros are the same as Ubuntu. I am using Nvidia Gforce 9100. The nouveau driver gives the flickering screen that I can still use until everything stops (pictures of the terminal is the nouveau driver). The other pictures are for the Nvidia propietary; those are total crash.
Also I have noticed that Manjaro is more stable with this kind of problem than Ubuntu or Mint...

OK, fair enough. If nouveau is not working then you should not have a problem with the Nvidia driver as long as you are installing it correctly. You may also need to blacklint the nouveau one from loading, depending on which distro you are going to use.

To fix this issue, you obviously need to pick a distro so that we can help you solve it. The solution will be slightly different depending on the distro that you choose.

Yes, windows can run hd movies and games. I have no problem with WIndows, which is weird to say in a Linux forum.

I will like to run Manjaro. I want to learn more about Arch Linux based systems.

OK, then install Manjaro.

Once installed, you need to determine which driver is actually working for you: nouveau (the free driver for Nvidia cards) or Nvidia (the Nvidia driver for Nvidia cards). You can have both installed, but you CANNOT use them both at the same time.

This page from the Arch documentation gives you the information you will need to test the driver. First, I would boot up Manjaro with just nouveau (since that is how it installs itself. Presumably that will not work, since you have already done that. So you need to blacklist nouveau as detailed here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/nouveau

And then install the Nvidia driver as detailed here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA

Good luck!

Hello again.

I have tried to follow the pages given to blacklist nouveau, but I have not manage it yet. I am missing something I am not getting yet. I am stuck here:

Quote:
If you want to keep the proprietary NVIDIA driver installed, but want to use the Nouveau driver, comment out nouveau blacklisting in /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf modifying it as follows:
Code:
#blacklist nouveau
There is not such a file. I have to create it? Any especific paramaters that I need to write in the file? Any guidance to where to start from?

Thanks for the help, highly apreciated.

Try this:

Code:
sudo echo > /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf blacklist\ nouveau
(or if you don't use sudo, use su -c)
