ru ning a computer with c:\win xp f:\umbuntu 10.04 is there anyway to get drivers from xp to umbuntu wont even recognize my usb belkin f6d4050 v1 wireless adapter so cant get online to update other drivers read somewhere that hardwiring it was best way to get it to recognize my network but puter has no ethernet connect ordered pci one over net was wondering if there was any advice anyone has till that comes in thanks in advance for any help i may get

Linux is known to have poor support for Belkin wireless adapters. I have never had luck with it myself.
You can use XP drivers through ndiswrapper but it can be hit or miss and its not easy to setup.
I suggest you try to avoid using words like "dude"

It's not the Belkin part of the equation that's the problem,... It's the Broadcom or Atheros chipset used in them that's the big problem...

On top of that, one model of wireless adapter may have different chipsets from one version to another... Running an lsusb command from a terminal can usually help ID what chipset is being used in the USB wireless adapter... From there, it's a matter of doing an internet search to determine what level of support it has, and what needs to be done to get it installed...

Both Broadcom & Atheros support in Linux has gotten better in the last few years, generally speaking...

I totally agree with you Jace. But thats my dilemma, have no ethernet port to hardwire. Ordered pci ethernet port off the net should recieve today. How is Linux about recognizing new hardware, as im sure the software will be windows based. Thanks in advance.

You do not need to install the provided software, the distro should provide wireless utils/software and the kernel should provide the drivers.

Atheros usually has marginal support in Linux but it is rapidly improving.

Thanks Kitty we will see when i get ethernet port, have a bunch of drivers missing. What really has me baffled is i am running windows xp on one hard drive. And Linux on slave hard drive every thing works on xp, little on Linux, but thats why im a newbie to Linux. If i am out of line mentioning xp on here i am sorry.

Inexpensive USB to Ethernet adapters, like the ones from adaptech, usually work out of box with no configuration ... They're like $10-$15...

OK have installed internal pci ethernet port have the computer hardwired its downloading about 500 updates now. So progress yay next question is how do i get this computer setup as wireless. Have a belkin F6D4050v1 wireless adapter in it can type in that lsusb thing and it shows Belkin Corporation in one of the usb ports. But that was before i hardwired it maybe it will now or is there someway i can get it to copy my network to ubuntu? thanks in advance for any help anyone may have for me. Im not computer stupid just linux stupid. LOL Gotta step out for few hours you good people have this thing fixed for me please when i get back please.

Thanks Jase i found this myself the other day tried it. Did not work for me may try as a last resort. Its alot of typing is there not a place where you can download drivers on here. I read somewhere that windows drivers will not work on here and everything works on the xp part get sounds now but wont play music on Linux. Thinkin about callin it a day and trying again in a m about to chunk it out in yard lol.
