Total Newbie Here Wanting To learn Knoppix STD

hello everyone, as you can all see im a newbe here..

Now i have a little problem..I have just finished downloading Knoppix-STD 3.4 and i have no idea on where to start..

i am currently running Windows XP and decided to make a change and try linux for a start...

I have a 40 gig harddrive with 2 partitions, one with 20 gig and the other with 20 gig (40 gig in total)..

I've read that the Knoppix-STD is a "Live CD" in which it boots stright into Knoppix as soon as you restart..

I've downloaded Knoppix and saved it to my desktop, I see it there as a zip file(winrarr) its stated "KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-17-EN.ISO". now i've been reading about on other forums(this is the one that makes sense) and i've come up with alot of ideas on how to use it..

Well let me explain step by step on what i've been doing..

I downloaded it.
Its saved to my desktop its 689 MB (723,064,832 bytes)
I burned it as a CD-ROM(ISO) with nero onto a CD-R 700 MB 80 Min CD

other forums say that i have to burn it as a iso image..the only thing that im not too sure about is if i should burn it as the zip file with winrarr or if i should extract it to another folder and burn it...

when i put it into my CD-R drive i was told that it should have automatically started booting into knoppix but it just skips it and goes stright into Windows XP....

Please if some one can help me out or even correct me to what i've been doing wrong is greatly apprechieated.....

Thank You.
:newbie:

Insert the cd in and check if there's one big file on it or small files+directories? The second option is correct. The method to burn ISO image withe Nero is described here: http://www.wizardskeep.org/mainhall/tutor/neroiso.html

To Aleem: unpacked, with the .iso extension.

Aleem 08-22-2004 12:31 PM

okay i got it up and running...

i burned the .ISO image with nero just as u showd me...

i inserted the cd into my computer and it scanned drives and it said something like limited shell droping you into a limited shell...

now this is the first time im using this so is there any "cheatcodes" i believe that would be usefull?

im running knoppix on a spare pc that has 192 mb ram and 9 gig free space..

is suggestions?

Aleem 08-22-2004 12:57 PM

can't find knoppix file system, sorry.

and then they just got this command prompt

Knoppix#

I am a newbie too. Maybe try "start x" or "kde" on the command line to get you into the gui. Though I am really not in a position to help you with this because I am a newbie too.

So you are running Knoppix on a spare CD now, there is no XO installation? Did you install it by using the command knoppix-installer ? What exactly happens when you boot up?

stranger777 08-22-2004 03:02 PM

I meant XP installation

I think the problem is with the cd, probably the .iso file you downloaded was missing a file or somenthing like that. You'd probably be better off dowloading knoppix-std again.

Aleem 08-22-2004 08:40 PM

well heres the deal...

i downloaded the file and burned it as a ISO image

i have windows xp already set up on the machine..

when i pop in the cd and boot stright from it it tells me that press enter or remove the cd if i want to quit what im doing...

so i hit enter and it starts scanning for firewire/usb devices and its done successfully it scans hard drive and something else...

then when it starts to scan i think cd rom...it just says that the knoppix file system is not on the pc already...

then it says "Droping into a (very limted) shell...

then a little command comes up with

Knoppix#

and it states that there are some other commands u can run such as

Cat
Mount
ISMOD

and some other...

thats the part where im stuck at and that was the last of that
