Unhappy Toshiba external unmounting problem

Hi,
I just bought a Toshiba 500Gb external hard drive USB driven. The manual says that before switching it off you have to unmounted it, by clicking the icon at the bottom bar and when it says safe to remove you ca switch it off. My problem is that when I try to unmount the drive I get a message : "The device "Generic volume" cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later" Can anyone please help me to solve the problem. Thanks.

Be sure that you are not on the drive in some way. Have you transfered a lot either from or to the drive prior to attempting to unmount? It will not unmount if data is still travelling across.

Are you using Gnome or KDE? How are you attempting to unmount? With a right click on the icon and selecting unmount?

Welcome to LQ!

You should make sure that you don't have a open app or possibly a filemanager with the drive open. You can back out of the drive/app then umount.

Thank you guys but I managed to solve the problem. I downloaded a small program called unloacker, which tells you which programs are still running and then you can option to unlock them. I think that I made a mistake of installing programs on the external drive. I was told that it is only used for data storage not for running programs. I should have upgrated my Dell laptop hard drive instead. I am a beginner in this kind of stuff.

Hi,

I see no reason not to use or launch programs from an external hdd. I've got one that I use for VM work environments. No problems.
