Toshiba A205-S4577 will not boot.

I have a Toshiba laptop that will not boot. I get to the grub menu which gives me the option to load Ubuntu, Ubuntu recovery mode, or a couple of memory tests.

If I select Ubuntu I get a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.

Selecting recovery mode gives me a lot of messages with the last one being "EDD information not available".

The memory test option does not return any errors.

If I try booting Mint from a bootable DVD I get the Mint screen and then it goes gray with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.

Any suggestions?

Hi...

Was the copy of Ubuntu working fine before this and if so, did you install or uninstall software or do anything that might have caused this?

Regards...

No History

I do not have a history on this laptop. I inherited it from my son when I got him a new one for college. The link from EDDY1 did have an affect but I was never able to get the same results twice. I once made it to the Ubuntu login screen before it locked up. Hiren's Boot CD loaded ok. I tried running the program on Hiren's Boot CD to erase the hard drive but I stopped it after about 15 minutes when I noticed it was going to take several days to clear the hard disk. I am able to boot Windows XP mini off the Hiren's cd. I don't get the grub menu anymore when booting after running the program to erase the hard disk. The partition program on Hiren's CD did not work. I was hoping to just clear and repartition the hard drive and install Mint.

Hi...

Usually, with a few exceptions, distributions will take care of partitioning and formatting automatically during installation, if you want to wipe the disk and start from scratch. If you want to dual boot or create some other arrangement, this will be more of a manual procedure.

I'm wondering if there is some issue with the hard drive specifically. I would find out what the brand is and then find the manufacturer's diagnostic utilty (which may be on the Hiren's CD) and run a test. There may be bad sectors or some other issue. To find the brand, you may need to open the specific access cover (or door) underneath the laptop.

Let us know what you find out.

Regards...

Can Corrupted Harddrive prevent Live CD From Booting?

I have tried booting several live CD's and the only one that will load is Hiren's Boot CD. I am able to run Mini Windows XP off of Hiren's Boot CD and it does have a lot of tools. I was hoping to boot mint, partition the whole drive, and install mint. Hiren's did have a partition wizard that showed a ton of overlapping partitions. Most of them were the size of almost the whole drive so it did not add up. Can a corrupted hard drive prevent a Live CD from booting?

Are the specs the same as this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834114349
It only shows 1Gig ram try something lighter
Anti-X, Debian-Xfce even debian-gnome will run.
Stay away from Ubuntu & Linuxmint unless you have 1 of the lighter Desktop Environment.

Hi...

This statement and the one below...

suggest to me that your CD/DVD-ROM drive is not working correctly or your Linux CD's are actually bad burns. A corrupted hard drive does not prevent a system from booting from a CD.

The three options I can think of right now are:

1. Purchase or borrow a USB external DVD-ROM drive, like the one shown here, and see if you can install Linux this way. You may still have bad copies, so you may need to reburn them.

2. Install Linux using a USB thumb drive using the instructions here. You can subsitute another USB Boot Installer and version of Mint, if you desire.

3. Take your system and Live CD's to a computer repair shop that can work with Linux and explain what you're wanting and what it's doing and have them sort out any issues.

If your CD/DVD-ROM drive is bad, you're probably going to need to replace it anyway.

Regards...
