top says SoftIRQ is taking 100% of one CPU

Folks

I am running "Linux liaag2ac.mx.compuserve.com 2.4.21-27.0.4.ELhugemem #1 SMP Sat Apr 16 18:22:53 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux" on a HP / PROLIANT / DL380-G3.

This is a sendmail machine with 6gig of ram. Sendmail/ClamAV/SpamAssassin read the mail and a homegrown app distributes it to a windows homegrown email system for about 140K users.

Lately, when sendmail runs something takes 100% of one of my two CPUs. top says that SoftIRQ is taking 100% of the CPU.

Where should I investigate this? I looked thru the software forums and the general forms.

I am new to using this collection of forums.
