Tons of problems by kernel recompile

I'm trying to rebuild my current kernel (2.4.25) to 2.6.12, but after kompiling the image and trying it out, I get the following output (crutial, as to my understanding, messages are in red):

Can someone please tell me what might be wrong, especially with the init process stuff... Isn't init just reading the /etc/rc.sysinit script and firing up the system services?
I'm trying to get it working with zImage_initrd boot-strategy and a standart Sys V-style initialization process among with and linuxrc.
Thanks for you help and suggestions in advance.

You might be better off re-installing with a newer version.

He Halturata,

First what for SCSI controller(s) are you using, what format did you use for your hard drives?

The Linux kernel SCSI layer does most of the work for SCSI device handling, if you get this wrong or not include all the kernel's SCSI code (or the wrong one) you get errors like this.

I remember that a way back there where some changes in the handling of SCSI drives/controllers. Now I cannot remember when that the handling of SCSI devices changed, so I not know if that happened between kernel 2.4.25 and kernel 2.6.12.

But I still see new releases of the 2.4 kernel, I belief that 2.4.33 was released on 11 august 2006 and kernel 2.4.34.pre6 was released on 19 November 2006.

So it is possible that upgrading to a 2.6 kernel you need to repartition your hard drives

Sawadeekrap,

Is there a specific reason why you are using Fedora Core 3? The latest Fedora Core 6 uses kernel 2.6.18-XX has the best hardware support; also Thai language support works much better and is available in Thailand as local download.

If you not have Hi-speed internet to download the 5 CD’s yourself, you can ask me for a copy (I send you 5 CD’s, you send me 5 empty CD’s)

Richard

Halturata, you also have to check the following utilities are filesystem specific. If you're running ext2 or ext3, be sure to update your e2fsprogs, if you're running jfs, be sure to update jfsutils, etc...

You need to check what version is needed for running kernel 2.6.5….

e2fsprogs (check what you now run: tune2fs)
jfsutils (check whaat you now run: fsck.jfs –V)
reiserfsprogs (check what you now run:
reiserfsck -V 2>&1 | grep reiserfsprogs)
xfsprogs (check what you now run: xfs_db –V)
nfs-utils (check what you now run: showmount –version)
