machine: hp pavilion ze4400
Dual boot centos 4.4 and xp Under linux:no sound or video problems.

I had been looking for the last two months on the next matters:

a) How to really play mp3 files.

b) How to watch dvd movies.

c) How to upgrade openoffice.

d) How to get centos extras for CENTOS 4.4

e) How to import from a same model the MBR/grub files.

I'd tried some of the options but the don't work, can somebody help me? Please. BUT BE PATIENT, I'M A NEEWBY.

Sure isn't urgent to me. All that stuff has 100s of howtos available. If you can't read simple instructions, how can we help?

Not urgent to me, either. There is lots (and LOTS) of easy to follow information on Google, about how to do all of this. Not to mention the threads on this very board that answer the same questions.

To play MP3 files, download RealPlayer for Linux or get VLC. VLC is enough for playing all kind of media on Linux I think. Go to openoffice.org and download new version. And what extras you're talking about in CentOS 4.4? When you install it, yum repos are enough to get lot of extras.... try

And if you want to import some other machine's grub file, lol it wont work at yours. If you wanna mod your current grub menu options, edit /boot/grub/grub.conf

You don't have a and b because, as far as I know, Centos is meant to be 100% free, meaning it doesn't include anything that is not open source (someone correct me if I'm wrong). You will need to get the correct packages to enable mp3 decoding and dvd decoding. I don't know where you would get them in Centos, but it may be similar to how you would do it in Fedora as both are Red Hat based distros.

Also, I'm not sure if Centos is the best choice for you. Centos means Community ENTerprise Operating System, so it seems to me to be geared more toward servers and business environments. You may be more happy with Fedora or some other desktop oriented distribution.

It mentions that rhythmbox is the default installed audio player and totem is the default installed video player, but the next pages show you how to add xmms and mplayer

Normally, I think there is something in the upper right hand corner of openoffice that checks for updates.

Extras such as acroread, flash, java, wine, etc. are mentioned on the last two pages.

Since Centos is binary-compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, perhaps this documentation will also be helpful:

If both computers are connected to the network and you know their locations on the network, I would guess you could use ftp to transfer the files from one to the other

If you don't know where they are on the network, but they are both connected to the internet, you could include them as attachments and email them to yourself from the first computer, then check email on the second and download and save it to the location on the second computer.

CentOS doesn't have any mp3 or mp4 codecs what so ever as far as I am aware, thus rendering a and b pretty much impossible other then using drivers/codecs meant for other distros which CentOS will probably just turn around and refuse to do anyway because it's a crazy and not very intelligent thing to try and do with CentOS. It is far more geared for servers and is not very good at the desktop side of things, 4.4 is also a bit old but still used, it's likely it doesn't contain Yum which makes installing things in CentOS nice and easy so I suspect for c and d(?) your looking at manually looking around for and installing RPMs, CentOS 4.6 I think is where Yum is first included but so much easier to go to 5.x (5.2 I believe is latest). I don't understand question e at all.

I could have given these answers yestarday but decided to wait given how unurgent this is. Don't use the word "Urgent", it just puts us off wanting to answer questions, nothing is urgent to us, if this was urgent to you, you wouldn't have waited two whole months to ask it anyway. Overall I'd just susgest Fedora, it's simular but meant for Desktop unlike RHEL or CentOS which are designed for servers.

No, your assertion is incorrect, r3. True to the extent that you use CentOS project repos, but using rpmforge for example, fixes this.

In the dual post, I already pointed the OP to the CentOS wiki which gives a detailed description if he/she can be bothered looking.

This is why I use wording like "as far as I am aware", happy to admit there are alot of things I do not know , my primary interaction with linux after all is on my server and only have a dual boot into CentOS for developmental/maintainance reasons really. Still hate it when people suggest things are "urgent" more so when it's clear it really really is not. I work in a Datacenter after all, I understand exactly what "urgent" is .

Fortantly I don't get so much of having to deal with customers of customers of customers anymore and deal more with direct customers, shocking how many single server customers burn their own servers, blame their ISP for their mistake and then claim repairing their madness is "urgent" . It's not as urgent as say the support server dying for one of our biggest customers... not at all, no... typically it's due to installing a firewall or disabling the ethernet port to their ISPs network in one method or another.

you didn't, I have enough experience with forums anyways to know when people are intentionally rude or not. I just wish people like ceaualbi would actually construct their posts better and actually show they are paying attension to any advice that is given or not. That's what I find rude, when people ask for help and then just completely disappear =/.
