to install nvidia drivers on linux mint 8 Helena


i have installed nvidia 3D drivers using software manger.They are downloaded but my linux is not using them.when i done it using comand line display is crashed .then i have to install whole linux again.
i have also installed the drivers directly from web and followed the steps given on that website:
>ctrl+alt+F1
>stp the gdb
>sh name
>start gdb
>restart
it is not working????
my comp's specigications
4,no graphic card,1 gb ram;
what should i do now ,i have to install my linux 4 times bcoz of this driver problem;
