timeout in locking authority then ,unable to determine tty name RPi
 

first timer only got rasp. pi running yesterday, today used sudo apt get install (program)' .after downloading prog nothing happened.
should i have somehow got out of root or whatever i have tried to reboot but now worse as getting time out and other error reports and can't log in.
New to linux so really stuffed now.
have read similar threads but not the same prob, anyone suggest a way out please

normally when you install a something using apt-get you should not expect anything to "happen"[1]. The program will be installed, and that's all. Running that program is a separate operation. What did you install? What do you expect it to do?

What do you mean by "can't log in"? How are you trying to log in? What error messages do you see?

Also, what OS are you running on your pi? Is it standard raspbian?

prog was FLDIGI a radio decoder prog which i have been using on my PC for a while.
I opened an LXterminal window and entered the sudo apt-get install fldigi command this seemed to work ok as i watched the prog load.
took a while but at the end i hoped to go to startx desktop and maybe find an icon for the prog or some way of running it but the RPI would not respond and in entering various attempts i seem to have fubared the main debian op system as listing during boot (which i can only do by first switching whole power off/on) give several red comments and a time out message.

ok, the fldigi package comes with three executables: fldigi-shell, flarq and fldigi. You can run them by by entering those commands in a terminal.
The documentation for these in the man pages. Eg in the terminal run:
As for your problems with booting the pi, from the information you provided I can't tell what to do to get it working. Couple of questions:

- Exactly what error messages are you seeing?
- Can you get a terminal?
- Are you able to ssh to it?

If you have not customised it much since the installation you can always reinstall on another sdcard.

thanks again evo2, yup just ordered another sd card as figured it would be as well to start again as only 1 prog so far!
must read up some more before trying again though,
somewhat concerned at ease of screwing system up!
