Thumbnails in GNOME

I am using GNOME and have all of the preview settings on "always" with a limit of 5mb. However, whenever I copy pictures from my camera (jpegs about 1.4mb each) the thumbnails do not show up in the file manager. The picutres can be viewed fine with gThumb and other programs, it is only the thumbnails that don't show up. The weird thing is that the .avi videos from my camera do show thumbnails when I copy them. Any suggestions?

ps. I am using Slackware 10.0, and also had the same problem when experimenting with Fedora 2.

Chances are that the pix from the cam contain EXIF info that
the thumbnail viewer doesn't like ... I have similar phenomena
on my wifes machine, KDE's thumbnails won't work until I resize
the pix with gimp or convert, which strips the EXIF ...

I haven't investigated it further, though, so this is just an
educated guess.

Tink

Hmmm... could I write a script that uses Image Magic or something to go through all of the pics and change them? If the answer is "yes," any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Yep, convert will do the trick, and it's been done before :}

Okay, I just noticed something even more incredibly odd about the situation. I can get the thumbnails to show up by switching to "view as image collection" and then switching back to icons... UNLESS there is a space in the folder name. If they are in a folder named "July" it will work alright, but if it is called "July 2004" it will not work. Any thoughts on this?
