Question thinkpad x40 ubuntu 11.04 is it powermanagenet

i have a thinkpad x40 previously it had xp and ubuntu 9.04 on dual boot. I installed ubuntu 11.04 i sometimes run down the battery, here i did the same thus kept it on standby, when it drained and i powered it up the numbers of the keyboard along with function keys F9 onwards failed.
cleaned up the keyboard swapped it to x41 the kwyboard had fried.
to check wHAT HAPPENS IF IT REVERSES i drained it again now i have 2 horizontal lines across the screen.
Seems power is spiking.
It cant be XP because it operates on GRUB to start with thus is it a problem which can be reversed doubt seems fried
