The witchcraft of Compiz

I saw this guy on youtube using Ubuntu 8.04 with this program called 'Compiz'?

It made his program windows look really fluid-like and a window switcher that would make Windows Vista's Aero cry.

It was this...

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZxfSwzhSn1c&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZxfSwzhSn1c&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Here the link, if the embed doesn't work.

Does anyone know how to use this?
Are there hardware requirements that I should know about before I get it myself?
Any compatibility issues with 8.10?

It comes enabled by default in Ubuntu 8.10 AFAIK, you just need a decent video card in order to use it, my intel GMA950 can run it

Whats the specs on that Intel GMA950?

Do you think my Nvidia 6150 SE will be able to handle some of the more superfluous features of the compiz?

and if you dont mind my asking, what does 'AFAIK' mean?

I don't know about the Intel card. But that nVidia card should be able to handle most effects just fine. Note however that the most aggressive ones might lag a bit.

This is why I don't like this kind of slang. A few key presses is the difference between something that everyone can understand, and something that only Internet geeks can read. The thing is even worse if you are not a native English speaker (I am not). My English might not be perfect always, but I think everyone with a basic knowledge of the language can read it without much trouble.

To answer your question, "AFAIK" means "as far as I know".

Generally speaking, Nvidia ANYTHING will run Compiz nicely. An Intel GMA950 gets spanked by every Nvidia card that has come out in the past 5 years.

Your card shouldn't have any issue running it, provided you have good drivers installed.

Well, I do try and keep my drivers as up to date as possible.

Windows Vista would send me my Nvidia updates as part of Windows Update... Will Ubuntu do this for me?

I spend a huge amount of time in online gaming/on the Internet, and I feel really stupid for not knowing what AFAIK means...

Real quick, so I don't have to log on the wine website, anyone running Half-Life 2 Episodes 1/2 on Ubuntu? Any compatibility errors there?

++

Wine is really not for the lazy, there's very little that will run out of the box and you'll usually need to get your hands dirty.
