the login screen keeps flashing?

im using rhel 5 and my x screen is flashing... nothing is displaying in it and im getting only single user mode.. i checked /var/log/messages and i got the error 'gdm_slave_xioerror_handler:Fatal X error-Restarting :0 '. i tried startx manually but it didnt worked...........please help me to solve the issue

Read through /var/log/Xorg.0.log and look for lines beginning with (EE).These are errors. You'll have to fix them before X will start. If you don't know how to do so then please post here and hopefully someone willbe able to help you.

i checked the log /var/log/Xorg.0.log...but i cant find any lines starting with (EE)..hope anyone will help me to solve it..

First thing I would do is install the latest drivers for your card. I don't know why but whenever I have problem relating to graphics, 90% of the time, updated drivers seem to fix the problem.
