The language of Linux
 

My first post
but first - 'asking your first question' link didn't work for me.

I want to find a place on the web where I can find the meaning to all the linux specific words, often programs names, and a description of what they are and how they can be used.
I have started with Puppy 4.3 - I can't find the manual - there is quite a lot of hints but nothing like a text book, maybe this way of learning shows my age. Puppy for Dummies was a start. Does it exist?

In my experience (albeit short) Google is pretty much the best glossary you can find for linux. Also, this forum is a great place to look for things like that. Just use the search link at the top of the page.


To get a manual for any command or program type "man" and then the name of the thing into a terminal.


Also, check out linuxhomenetworking.org . It helped me out a lot.

If you Google "Linux commands" you should quickly come across a number of good sites where all the common (and some not as common) Linux "words" or commands, are described. If there's no detailed description, then the man pages as suggested by an earlier poster, is the place to learn the usage of the commands.

I'm not sure if Puppy includes a full manpage set, but the Linux manpages are also available online-- I haven't got a link handy, but Google can take you there.
