the kernel

Hi all.. as i've stated in all my posts.. i am new to linux.. i've been on n' off which isn't a good thing for me.

lately i've been trying to install a modem chipset and a ma111 wlan but with both i've keep running into a problem.. kernel... and kernel source..
i can't seem to install either one with out either configureing the kernel and knowing where the kernel source is..

im overwhelmed by this.. im not quite sure of what the kernel is because of the unknown im a little worried that i might screw up the kernel..

can anyone give me more information about the kernel? and what i have to do in order to install my usb ma111 wlan and pctel modem.. (i've found all the drivers and downloaded them)

thank you

The kernel is the "core of the operating system", Windows
does have one, too ;) As for the kernel itself: it's certainly
installed, otherwise the machine wouldn't boot. As for the
sources: they're most likely on your distributions CD and
just need you to install them.

As for the drivers: once the kernel-source is installed,
follow the readme's, I guess.

Cheers,
Tink
