rpms only fail due to dependencies if you try to install them individually. Don't do that. Use the pkg mgr if at all possible.
Incidentally, apt-get, yum are network protocols, not dependent on http.

what i shouldve continued saying was that when i install from rpm sometimes there is a shared-lib or something that is missing and it refuses to install even if i have no intention of using that feature. but from source the config may complain but you can force it to install and the program will crash (horribly) when it tries to use the missing *.so. this happened to me when trying to install freetype for some reason...
