Text mode won't accept root password

I just installed Ubuntu and want to install driver for my Geforce 7 card. CTRL+ALT+F1 and then try to get to root and it won't accept my password. Any ideas? Thanks

by default, ubuntu does not have a password for root, you (being a sudoer) has to assign one, i.e. when logged in as you:

sudo passwd root
> give your password
> enter a new password for root
> retype the password for root.

only then can you log in as root. Until then, you have to do everything via sudo.

why log in as root anyway,

just run sudo bash whenever you need a root shell,

you never need a root passoword on ubuntu
