vi/vim, pico, nano, emacs are all command line or have command line versions. vi is the standard for Unix/Linux and comes pre-installed on every distro. What about that post didn't work?

Code:
zypper in nano
As root of course

You still didn't answer why that post didn't work for you. If you plan to use Linux from the command line, you better get used to vi.

Are you sure the file you tried to open exists? It sounds like you just opened an empty file with vi. That's exactly what it's supposed to look like when you open an empty/new file.

OpenSUSE 12.1 and 12.2 are UNSUPPORTED!!!
OpenSUSE 12.3 will become unsupported this summer ( in 97 DAYS!!!)
http://en.opensuse.org/Lifetime

Nano should be installed by default
if not use the above to install it
BUT 12.1 is NOT SUPPORTED any longer
and there have been NO security updates to 12.1 for OVER A YEAR

Please stay current and UP TO DATE !!!
install the current OpenSUSE 13.1
