Terminal not accepting any commands

I just installed Ubuntu 8 on an Ebox 4300, its my first time using a Linux OS and whenever I type/paste ANY command into the terminal I get "command not found" and when I try to download updates it says "file not found" and if I plug in a flash drive it says "cannot mount", basically everything I do ends up with a fail.

I was hoping someone could give me some advice. When I search for help I find nobody else seems to have this problem, they just have problems with the odd command but I have problems with all commands.
Thanks all

If that is Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 you are using support for it ended over three years ago which is why you can't download updates. They aren't available any longer. The command not found is probably because you are using commands that require root/administrator privileges and you are not logged in to the terminal as root or preceding the command with sudo.

If you could post some specifications on your hardware someone might be able to suggest another Linux or a newer Ubuntu which would work. Processor, RAM and graphics card inof to start. Also, whether the Ubuntu you are using is the only operating system you are using.

Thanks for the reply, this is my spec:

VESA mounting support
VIA Eden ULV 500MHz
512MB DDR2
PXE diskless boot
10/100Mbps LAN
Compact Flash card
USB V2.0 ports x 3 (2 at the front)
Wireless LAN (optional)

Ubuntu 14 is way too slow and I found that Ubuntu 8 suits the spec of this mini pc perfectly, I doubt it could handle 9 or 10 unfortunately. I simply want to surf the net so updates and security isnt important I guess as theres no sensitive data on it.

yes this is the only OS on this PC

When I click on applications I only get Terminal and not root terminal that others speak about, how do I access this if its not in the menu?
thanks

EDIT: its ok i found out how to do that I type sudo -s and ists now changed to root, thanks very much for that info.

Ubuntu has excellent on-line documentation. You won't find anything specifically for your version because it's well past end of life, but it can be very useful.

About dot com also has a good Linux site that's tilted towards Ubuntu.

Thanks very much guys, I will try those alternatives you suggested it sounds like a winner to me, but I would like to come back to Ubuntu ans learn this terminal thing, ive always wanted to learn Linux. I will try these suggestions tomorrow and hopefully have good news then.

Thanks again all for your time.

That lxle is very good I like it, runs just as fast as Ubuntu 8, menu's open fast etc, only problem is it wont play video, even the lowest quality video is just 1 frame per few seconds, seems strange as ive seen people with this Ebox happily running video. ive had this problem in all OS ive tried, winxp, ubuntu and now lxle. I guess it must be a hardware problem. Im getting a few more of these Ebox's sent to me next week so I might have more luck with those.

Thanks for your help guys.
