Unhappy Terminal cannot access Internet through proxy server

Hello,

I have a problem; my Fedora 8 machine is able to reach the Internet through Firefox, and also through apps like the package manager. We have a proxy server here...I have set up proxy settings in Firefox prefs and also in the System>Preferences>Internet and Network area.

However, whenever my terminal needs to download a package or touch a repo for something, the terminal cannot get out. I have tried 'export http_proxy="http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80"; (also https_proxy and ftp_proxy) in the .bashrc, does anyone have any other idea why my terminal is blocked?

I'll be on and actively checking this thread...been trying to solve this for quite some time.

The terminal doesn't need to download anything.
You must be using a command inside the terminal that need to download.

The perl script must be told to use the proxy.

If you're trying to use yum, you can add proxy=http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:xxxx to your yum.conf file.
