telstra usb turbo modem in Australia

new to linux. At the moment I am running 1 laptop on microsoft and 1 in linux. Mainly because I can,t get my telstra tubo modem to work on ubuntu 8.1.
I've seen a couple of posts saying do this or that by writing code.I can't and I guess don't really want to. Ubuntu is s close to being suitable to me as just an ordinary computer user that believes in free choice. Can anyone help? mike barber

thanks for all your advice. Unfortunately It's like a highschool student explaining to a first year student how the universe was made. My modem is a telstra modem as distinct from a bigpond modem in as much as it has no user name or password and accesses telsta direct through a data mobile phone type number. But please keep trying to make it all sink into me.
