Unhappy Telstra bigpond usb Sierra aircard 880u will not connect on mint debian

I have just started using the latest version of Mint Debian(LMDE) on an emachine 64 bit. I am dual booting with windows 7 on which the Telstra Bigpond Sierra aircard 880u usb modem works fine. It will not connect using LMDE, I have tried some of the simpler fixes found on the web but to no avail, I am not very linux experienced so hav e not tried command line fixes.
The software recognizes the modem, I have used telstra.bigpond as the apn and used correct dial number sequences with bigpond username and password. Has anyone got this combination working and if so how.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Find the ID...

Open a terminal and use the command "lsusb" to find the ID number of the modem. Then use the ID to search the Internet for how this modem is configured in linux.

In addition, post back with the ID number so we know what device this is and can give you more advice.

Thanks for quick response however the Sierra AC880u is dying - almost dead, dropouts and difficult to get connection; so I have just ordered a new Bigpond ultimate usb modem I think a Sierra 312U. I will wait its arrival due 18 August and then seek further help if needed. I will advise when received and tried on LMDE. thanks again
