Telnet client under SuSE 9 AMD-64

I have used SuSE v9 (i386 version) to access a remote device via telnet. I establish a ppp connection via an ISDN modem to the remote ISDN router which assigns me an IP address. By setting my routing appropriately, I can then use a telnet client to connect to the device on the remote LAN.

I used a totally default setup of SuSE v9 and simply configured the ppp connection to dial the remote and login to the network.

However! If I perform the same default setup using SuSE v9 (AMD64 version), the ppp connection works, but I can't get the telnet client to work.

The system is an Athlon 64 on a Gigabyte K8NPro board. Everything else seems to be OK in terms of the installed software.

I can ping the remote device, but when connecting with the telnet client I seem to be connected and get the usual "Escape character is ^]" but that's as far as it gets. No login message. If I look at the controls being communicated, I get the WILL, DO, etc messages, but these all seem to be sent from the client, there seems to be no response coming back.

I've done fresh install of the i386 version and it works fine! Going back to the AMD64 version gives the same problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Carl.
