Question Telnet

I have installed 7.1 on a pc and can telnet out from it but can't telnet into it. I can maunually start the rpc.nfsd and mountd daemons, and I STILL can't telnet in. What do I do to set this pc up to auto-start whatever daemons are necessary to solve this.
Thanx muchly.

nfds and mountd are for NFS services, not telnet. Have a look at in.telnetd or something similiar. You might need to edit /etc/inetd.conf or /etc/xinetd.conf (probably the latter - you mean Redhat 7.1 yeah?), or just start the daemon yourself.

By default you probably find that root won't be able to login by default. I would say to edit /etc/securetty but I think you'll need to fight with PAM - not something I've ever really played with.

HTH

Depending on how you installed RH 7.1, telnetd might not be installed. To check to see what installed services are available, use

/usr/sbin/ntsysv or tksysv

Either will tell you what daemons are available at the various run levels of Linux. They'll also let you configure daemons to run at boot up.

Run them as root.
