in your /home/$user directory there should be a .mozilla directory.
Copy it. all of it to /some/other/place

You can use your File Manager (most will show hidden stuff on Ctrl+[hH])

I use enigmail 1.1.2 with tbird 3.1.9 and I won't upgrade because some other plugin I favor (Firetray 0.3.2) doesn't like it when I upgrade.
I got to have a "message count" indicator in my Notification Area when tbird is minimized and Firetray provides that.

With a backup of ~/.mozilla somewhere, you are "safe" to experiment with Upgrades or Updates to the system, this should also include Thunderbird upgrades with a Version bump.

Every enigmail ever produced

Good Luck.
