tar -xz


Ok now im trying to extact the file in puTTy and its a pretty huge file (my backups) when I put inthe command for puTTy

it just sits their


root@baghdad [/home/baghdad/]# tar -xz archive.tgz


I have gone for 15 minuets come back and its still their, their is no folder that is un tar'ed called archive in my account so it didnt unarchive how come

try 'tar -zxvf <yourfile.tgz>', it should untar the gzipped file to the current directory

the "-f" part was the important part you were missing; it tells tar to use the following file as the archive

heh, i always used that -zxvf without knowing what the 'f' meant, never thought to check the manual eihter, now i know
