tar files from disk to lt0-3 drive

I am tring to tar files from disk to a lt03 tape drive. I am using the simple tar cvf command. I have about 15 files totalling around 50 Gig. I get the message "Do not have permission to write to device". Do I need to add something to my command?
I am using a sun blade 2500 machine
Tape drive is Ultruim3.
Thanks ahead for any advise!
Karen

What are the ownerships and permissions on the device
node for the tape drive? If the perms are "normal" just
make sure you're a member of the owning group.

Cheers,
Tink
