TAO and DAO (SAO) in cdrecord

I am having trouble burning a 6.9mb file to disc using cdrecord. I tried a Cd and a DVD. When I type cdrecord -dao [file].iso, I get the message: "Drive does not support SAO recording. Illegal write mode for this drive." When I type: "cdrecord -tao [file].iso, I get the message "Drive does not support TAO recording. Illegal write mode for this drive." When I type plain old "cdrecord [file].iso," I get the same message telling me SAO recording not supported. I burn CDs and DVDs from the GUI all the time, but the command line syntax I am using is no good somehow. Any thoughts?
