System lockup while using man

Can someone please help me out or give me some suggestions? The problem that I am experiencing:

I am using Linux 8.0 on my laptop (HP Omnibook XE3L) with a 1 gig processor and 256mg ram. Linux runs good on my system, but when I try to view a manual using the man command, it hard locks my system. It doesn't always happen, but it happens more often than not. I still have not been able to run man su. It locks up my system as soon as I hit the enter key. I am also using kernel 2.4.18.

Thanks for your help in this matter.
