Exclamation system hangs no response, no display

I have a pc that i am trying to /planning to use as a server (running the machine all times) to help to understand linux better. It has a PIII 600 mhz processor with 512 mb ram, 2 HD (80 GB, 20 GB), it has RHEL 5 installed.

It boots fine (i did not see any error message), seems to be running fine without any problem but i leave it running for some times (lets say 18 - 24 hrs), the system hangs - no display (gray screen with nothing on it, like when the cpu is powered off with monitor turned on), it does not respond to any keyboard entry or mouse movement. I had to hard reset the machine by pressing the power button, then the machine reboots fine. I have checked the log file but could not find any thing there or atleast any thing that i can think of as a problem. here is the log file; the machine hung and was rebooted when i came back home at Apr 09 at 10:05.

I dont know if it is relevant to this problem but i will describe it any way. If i use telinit 3 to switch run level 5 to 3 it hangs right after jexec. it does not do any thing and had to be reset. thank u all for your help.

Bit early in the morning here but the first thing that jumps at me is this message:-

<snip>

Apr 8 14:14:03 linuxserver exportfs[15240]: 192.168.0. has non-inet addr
Apr 8 14:14:05 linuxserver setroubleshoot: SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/pmap_dump (portmap_helper_t) "read" to inotify (inotifyfs_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l b2c8b337-f0f4-47d5-b8f6-783890635bae

<pins>

For a start there is a bad address here:- 192.168.0

Also is it a total kernel hang or can you gain control by using the sys-rq keys?

thanks for your response. I believe it is a total kernel hang, no reponse from any key entry (including ctrl+alt+del even though it is enabled in the configuration) I have not tried the sysrq keys - coz i am still a newbie and i was not aware of that.

any way here is what i did - i turned the acpi off at grub config file coz there was a warning message when the system was booting the bios is older than the cut off date for acpi (i guess i am using an older AWARD bios). SO far the system been running without any problem for last 24 hrs after turning acpi off and this is the longest. hopefully this will solve the problem and i will update regarding this.

thanks again
