System crash (xP pro-side) when dual booted with 10.4 - Thinkpad z61t
 

Hi all - first time on this site,..pretty impressive. Nonetheless, Im stuck..had friend to install both OS but windows crashed upon me trying
to add things - drivers,etc. to make it look/act as it should found out
later that it's due to quirkiness of running two systems in tandem (occas)...anyways i'm going to boot a fresh copy of xP pro again tomorrow..any wisdom to be lent b4 i do...uBuntu 10.4 rocks,..so I will be a permanent user/supp of this oS. Thx for having a forum such as this as I am green as can be to this stuff :)

What does "occas" mean?

Running Windows and Linux in a dual-boot environment is just fine. They don't interact (unless you specifically try to) and one would not crash the other.

Hi - thx for response... i meant occasionally - sorry (got lazy). Then to clarify, is it a 'dual-boot' when only u can launch both
simultaneously (or launch one thru the other),...or when then computer is booting up & u have the choice of either one to use ?? Just want to make sure im using the correct terms. Because you're right, they both coexisted peacefully until i wanted sound on my computer & tried to download sound cards,etc. It's ironic though because the 10.4 side held out & i've had no problems & at least sound came as delivered...As I believe I have everything i need on the Ubuntu side, and advice before I reinstall the XP ?

Dual-boot (or triple-boot, or quad-boot, etc..) is when you get a menu at power-on, and you select one OS, be it Windows or a Linux or whatever, and boot that one OS.

NON-dual-boot can take several formats. You might have installed Ubuntu INSIDE XP, using Wubi for example, or maybe inside a "virtual machine" - or maybe you installed XP inside a virtual machine which is running on Ubuntu?

So, please clarify for us, which way you have your OS's installed, and precisely what the current problem is (if there is one -- something about sound card drivers? For which OS?). Perhaps then some members will be able to advise on what you should do next, or what to look out for when you go to re-install one or both OS's.
