Angry system-config- display wont work or xorgconfig or xf86config


I cannot get system-config-display to work in text log in or other commands to work to change resolution on fedora10 after i log in and start up my screen is scrambled and freezes i have searched forums and seen that alot of people have system-config-display not work but non of their solutions have worked for me. i am a noob () and was hoping some one can help me

if any one needs more info let me know please i really want to start using linux and i deleted windows xp for this

Need to know the HW, especially the videocard.
Try

X -probeonly

AFTER starting/going to init level 3 eg

telinit 3

at the cmd line

first what is your graphics card ?
is it an ATI or Nvidia ?
is it a desktop or laptop ?
is it a full card or a built in to the mother broad ?

this is a guess but .. i am thinking you might have a built in ati pseudo-3d chip in the computer ( and it is a laptop ) . But i am only guessing at this point .

also with fedora 10 "system-config-display" needs to be installed . 10 is supposed to do this automatically
